Brian Armstrong, CEO of Coinbase

Biography

Brian Armstrong was born on January 25, 1983, near San Jose, California, to parents who both worked as engineers. Raised in a household that valued technology and problem-solving, Armstrong showed an early aptitude for both academics and entrepreneurship. He attended Bellarmine College Preparatory before heading to Rice University in Houston, where he earned dual bachelor\’s degrees in economics and computer science in 2005, followed by a master\’s degree in computer science in 2006.

While still at Rice, Armstrong co-founded his first venture, UniversityTutor.com, a peer tutoring marketplace that gave him his first taste of building products from scratch. After graduating, he worked as a developer at IBM and then as a consultant at Deloitte before joining Airbnb as a software engineer in 2011. It was at Airbnb where he experienced firsthand the staggering complexity and inefficiency of processing international payments across 190 countries \u2014 a frustration that would soon change his life.

In 2012, Armstrong co-founded Coinbase with Fred Ehrsam after going through the Y Combinator startup accelerator with an initial $150,000 investment. Under his leadership, Coinbase grew into the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the United States, going public via a direct listing on NASDAQ in April 2021 with a market capitalization that briefly touched $85 billion. In May 2025, Coinbase was added to the S&P 500 Index. As of 2026, Armstrong\’s net worth is estimated between $7.5 billion and $14 billion, depending on market conditions. Beyond Coinbase, he co-founded NewLimit, an anti-aging biotech company, and founded ResearchHub, a platform for open-access scientific research.

Orange Pill Story

Brian Armstrong\’s Bitcoin awakening came in 2010 when he stumbled upon Satoshi Nakamoto\’s Bitcoin whitepaper. At the time, he was working at Airbnb, spending his days debugging payment systems that took days to settle and charged exorbitant fees for cross-border transactions. The whitepaper hit him like a revelation \u2014 someone had invented money that could move instantly, globally, without permission from anyone.

Armstrong\’s conviction was further cemented after witnessing the devastating effects of hyperinflation in Argentina, where ordinary people saw their savings wiped out by government monetary policy. He began spending his nights and weekends writing code in Ruby and JavaScript to buy and store Bitcoin. The idea consumed him. He posted on Hacker News looking for a co-founder and eventually connected with Fred Ehrsam through a Reddit cryptocurrency forum. Together, they entered Y Combinator in 2012 and built the product that would become Coinbase \u2014 starting with a simple \u201cBuy Bitcoin\u201d button that users kept coming back for. That single feature proved to be the product-market fit moment that launched a crypto empire.
