Cameron Winklevoss, Co-founder & President of Gemini

Biography

Cameron Howard Winklevoss was born on August 21, 1981, in Southampton, New York, and raised in Greenwich, Connecticut. His father, Howard Winklevoss, was a professor of actuarial science at the Wharton School and founder of Winklevoss Consultants and Winklevoss Technologies. Cameron has an identical twin brother, Tyler, with whom he has collaborated on nearly every major venture throughout his career.

Cameron attended the prestigious Collegiate School in New York City before enrolling at Harvard University, where he graduated in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. He later earned a Master of Business Administration from the Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford in 2010, where he was a member of Christ Church college and competed in the famed Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race. Cameron is also an accomplished rower who represented the United States at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, competing in the men’s pair event alongside his brother Tyler.

At Harvard, Cameron co-founded HarvardConnection (later renamed ConnectU) with Tyler and classmate Divya Narendra. The brothers famously sued Mark Zuckerberg, alleging he stole their idea to create Facebook. The lawsuit was settled in 2008 for approximately $65 million in cash and Facebook shares. Cameron and Tyler then parlayed that settlement into one of the most consequential bets in financial history when they invested heavily in Bitcoin. Their estimated net worth is approximately $1.3 billion, primarily in Bitcoin and Gemini equity.

Orange Pill Story

Cameron Winklevoss discovered Bitcoin in the most unlikely of settings. In the summer of 2012, while vacationing in Ibiza, Spain, a man named David Azar approached the twins at the Blue Marlin beach club and asked Cameron if he had heard about Bitcoin. Intrigued, Cameron and Tyler began researching the cryptocurrency when they returned to the United States.

The light bulb turned on quickly. Cameron recognized that Bitcoin was the first form of money purpose-built for the internet, something you could send around the world like email. He saw three key properties that made Bitcoin revolutionary: scarcity, portability, and resistance to the kind of monetary manipulation that had fueled the 2008 financial crisis. Their thesis was rooted in the belief that Bitcoin represented a digital evolution of gold’s role as a store of value.

In April 2013, Cameron and Tyler invested approximately $11 million of their Facebook settlement proceeds into Bitcoin at around $120 per coin. At one point, they owned roughly 1% of all Bitcoin in circulation. By November 2017, when Bitcoin crossed $20,000, their investment had turned them into the world’s first confirmed Bitcoin billionaires. Rather than simply holding, they went a step further and founded Gemini in 2014 to build the infrastructure they believed the crypto industry desperately needed.

Involvement with Bitcoin

Cameron Winklevoss has been one of the most active builders in the Bitcoin and cryptocurrency ecosystem. In 2014, he co-founded Gemini, a New York-based cryptocurrency exchange and custodian, serving as its President. Gemini was designed from the ground up to meet rigorous regulatory standards, becoming one of the first fully regulated crypto exchanges in the United States. The exchange went public on the Nasdaq in September 2025, raising approximately $425 million in its IPO.

The Winklevoss brothers were true Bitcoin ETF pioneers. In 2013, they filed the first-ever application for a Bitcoin exchange-traded fund with the SEC, more than a decade before Bitcoin ETFs were finally approved in January 2024. Though their application was rejected, it laid the groundwork for the eventual approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs.

Cameron has also been active in Bitcoin advocacy and politics. In June 2024, he publicly donated $1 million in Bitcoin to Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, citing Trump’s pro-Bitcoin and pro-crypto stance. Through Winklevoss Capital, the brothers have invested in numerous crypto and blockchain startups. They have consistently pushed for regulatory clarity, advocating for a “Bitcoin and Crypto Bill of Rights” that would protect people’s rights to own digital assets, hold them in self-custody, and engage in peer-to-peer transactions.
