Biography
Elon Reeve Musk was born on June 28, 1971, in Pretoria, South Africa, to Maye Haldeman, a Canadian-born model and dietitian, and Errol Musk, an electromechanical engineer and property developer. A voracious reader from childhood, Musk taught himself computer programming by age twelve and sold his first software — a space-themed video game called Blastar — for roughly $500.
Musk moved to Canada at seventeen before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned dual bachelor’s degrees in Economics from the Wharton School and in Physics from the College of Arts and Sciences in 1997. He briefly enrolled in a Stanford PhD program in energy physics but left after just two days to pursue entrepreneurial opportunities in the burgeoning internet economy.
His early ventures — Zip2 (sold to Compaq for $307 million in 1999) and X.com (which became PayPal, acquired by eBay for $1.5 billion in 2002) — gave him the capital and confidence to swing for the cosmos. In 2002 he founded SpaceX with the stated mission of making humanity multiplanetary. Two years later he joined Tesla as its lead investor and became CEO in 2008, guiding the automaker from the brink of bankruptcy to the world’s most valuable car company. His 2022 acquisition of Twitter — rebranded X — added a media and payments platform to his sprawling empire. As of early 2026, Musk’s net worth stands at approximately $852 billion, making him the world’s wealthiest person.
Orange Pill Story
Musk’s relationship with Bitcoin has been anything but linear. As far back as 2014, he viewed the cryptocurrency primarily as a tool for illicit transactions and expressed open skepticism. His thinking began to shift in May 2020, when a Twitter exchange with author J.K. Rowling about digital money prompted him to publicly reflect on monetary policy. “Massive currency issuance by govt central banks is making Bitcoin Internet money look solid by comparison,” he wrote — revealing a mind already wrestling with the implications of unlimited fiat printing.
In that same thread, Musk disclosed he personally held just 0.25 BTC — a small amount gifted by a friend years earlier — but the signal was clear: he was paying attention. By February 2019, speaking on the ARK Invest podcast, he had already called Bitcoin’s design “quite brilliant,” describing cryptocurrency as “a far better way to transfer value than pieces of paper.” The final click came in the inflationary crucible of 2020 and early 2021. With central banks flooding markets with liquidity in response to the pandemic, Musk concluded that hard, scarce digital money was no longer a curiosity — it was a necessity. In January 2021, he added “#bitcoin” to his Twitter bio, sending the asset’s price surging more than 20% in hours. Within weeks, Tesla had committed $1.5 billion of its treasury to the orange coin. The world’s most powerful entrepreneur had officially stacked sats.

Involvement with Bitcoin
No single corporate act did more to legitimize Bitcoin on Wall Street than Tesla’s February 2021 disclosure that it had purchased $1.5 billion worth of BTC — roughly 43,200 coins representing 7.5% of the company’s cash reserves. The move was announced via a 10-K SEC filing and sent Bitcoin soaring past $44,200. Tesla simultaneously announced plans to accept Bitcoin for vehicle purchases and confirmed it would operate Bitcoin nodes directly, retaining BTC payments in native form rather than converting to dollars.
The honeymoon was short-lived. In May 2021, citing environmental concerns about coal-powered Bitcoin mining, Musk suspended Bitcoin payment acceptance. Despite the reversal, Tesla held firm on its holdings — and has never fully exited. As of early 2026, Tesla holds approximately 11,509 BTC, while SpaceX, where Musk also serves as CEO, holds roughly 8,285 BTC valued at around $545 million. Musk has also positioned his social platform X to incorporate Bitcoin through the forthcoming “X Money” payments ecosystem. On the political front, his 2025 America Party explicitly adopted a pro-Bitcoin stance, with Musk declaring “fiat is hopeless.” Across his corporate empire, Elon Musk has become one of the largest institutional advocates — and holders — of Bitcoin in the world.
Media Appearances & Coverage
Musk’s most consequential Bitcoin media moments have often been 280 characters or fewer, but he has also engaged on longer-form platforms. In February 2019 he appeared on the ARK Invest podcast with Cathie Wood, offering an early and substantive endorsement of Bitcoin’s design. A February 2021 Clubhouse appearance coincided with Tesla’s BTC purchase announcement. His most detailed public discussion of Bitcoin came at The B Word conference in July 2021, where alongside Jack Dorsey and Cathie Wood he confirmed his long-term holding thesis and outlined his vision for Bitcoin as a monetary efficiency tool. Academic researchers have since documented that Musk’s tweets about Bitcoin can move its price by as much as 16.9% in a single day, making him arguably the most market-influential individual voice in all of crypto.
