Larry Fink, CEO of BlackRock
Biography
Laurence Douglas Fink was born on November 2, 1952, in Van Nuys, California, into a middle-class Jewish family. His father, Frederick, owned a shoe store, and his mother, Lila, was an English professor. Fink earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from UCLA in 1974 and an MBA from UCLA’s Anderson School of Management in 1976, where he studied real estate.
Fink began his career at First Boston, where he became one of the pioneers of the mortgage-backed securities market. He was credited with creating the first collateralized mortgage obligation (CMO) and helped build a trading operation that generated over $1 billion in profits. But a devastating $100 million loss in 1986 — caused by an interest rate miscalculation — reshaped his entire philosophy. The experience convinced him that rigorous risk management was the foundation of all sound investing.
In 1988, Fink and seven partners co-founded BlackRock under the corporate umbrella of The Blackstone Group, focusing on fixed-income asset management with an emphasis on risk analytics. BlackRock became independent in 1994, went public in 1999, and grew through a series of transformative acquisitions — most notably the $13.5 billion purchase of Barclays Global Investors in 2009, which made it the largest asset manager on Earth. Today, BlackRock manages over $11.5 trillion in assets. Fink’s net worth is estimated at approximately $1.2 billion. He is widely regarded as one of the most powerful figures in global finance.
Orange Pill Story
Larry Fink’s Bitcoin journey is one of the most dramatic reversals in Wall Street history. In October 2017, speaking at an Institute of International Finance meeting, Fink declared that Bitcoin was nothing more than “an index of money laundering.” He dismissed cryptocurrency as a speculative vehicle with no legitimate use case. As late as 2018, he maintained that Bitcoin was “not a real investment.”
The turning point came gradually. By 2020, Fink began acknowledging Bitcoin as a “global asset.” In 2021, he started describing it as “digital gold” after sustained engagement with technologists, investors, and economists who convinced him of Bitcoin’s fixed supply, decentralized architecture, and potential as a non-sovereign store of value. In June 2023, BlackRock filed an application for a spot Bitcoin ETF — a seismic signal that the world’s largest asset manager was going all-in. On July 15, 2024, Fink told CNBC: “I was a proud skeptic… my opinion five years ago was wrong.” The iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) launched on January 11, 2024, and became the fastest-growing ETF in history, amassing over $37 billion in assets in its first year alone.

Involvement with Bitcoin
Larry Fink’s most consequential Bitcoin move was steering BlackRock to file for a spot Bitcoin ETF in June 2023, which was approved by the SEC on January 10, 2024. The iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) launched the following day and shattered every ETF launch record in history, accumulating over $37 billion in assets within its first year and surpassing $70 billion in AUM by 2025. IBIT became the third-largest ETF launch of 2024, trailing only Vanguard’s and iShares’ S&P 500 funds. The approval of IBIT — along with several competing products — marked a watershed moment for Bitcoin’s institutional legitimacy.
Beyond the ETF, Fink has used his annual shareholder letters as a platform to advocate for tokenization of all financial assets, arguing that blockchain technology will transform capital markets the way email replaced postal mail. In his 2025 letter, he explicitly warned that unchecked U.S. debt could cause Bitcoin to displace the dollar as the global reserve currency — an extraordinary statement from the CEO of a firm that manages more assets than the GDP of every country on Earth except the United States and China. BlackRock has also launched a tokenized money market fund (BUIDL) on the Ethereum blockchain, signaling Fink’s commitment to bringing traditional finance onto decentralized infrastructure.
Media Appearances & Coverage
Fink’s Bitcoin commentary has been featured in virtually every major financial outlet. His July 2024 CNBC interview where he declared himself a “major believer” and admitted his earlier views were wrong became one of the most-cited crypto moments of the year. He discussed Bitcoin extensively at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January 2025, where his $700,000 price prediction made global headlines. His December 2025 appearance at the New York Times DealBook Summit with Andrew Ross Sorkin provided a candid retrospective on his evolution from skeptic to champion. Fink’s annual shareholder letters — particularly the 2025 edition warning about Bitcoin replacing the dollar — are treated as major financial events. His views are regularly covered by CNBC, Bloomberg, the Financial Times, the Wall Street Journal, Fortune, CoinDesk, Cointelegraph, Decrypt, and Bitcoin Magazine.
