Biography
Michael J. Saylor was born on February 4, 1965, in Lincoln, Nebraska. His father was a United States Air Force chief master sergeant, and Saylor spent his formative years living on Air Force bases around the world — an itinerant childhood that instilled in him a drive for excellence and a taste for big ideas. In 1983, he earned a full ROTC scholarship to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he double majored in aeronautical and astronautical engineering and the history of science. At MIT he joined the Theta Delta Chi fraternity, where he met Sanju Bansal, his future co-founder.
A medical condition grounded his Air Force pilot ambitions, redirecting his formidable intellect toward the emerging world of software. After stints at The Federal Group and DuPont — where he built computer simulation models to forecast market trends — Saylor founded MicroStrategy with Bansal in 1989. The company pioneered business intelligence software, landing a landmark $10 million contract with McDonald’s in 1992. MicroStrategy went public in June 1998 at $12 per share, doubling on its first day of trading. By early 2000, Saylor’s net worth had soared to $7 billion, making him the wealthiest person in the Washington, D.C. metro area.
The dot-com crash brought a painful reckoning: MicroStrategy restated its financials, its stock collapsed, and Saylor personally paid $8.3 million to settle SEC charges without admitting wrongdoing. He stayed at the helm, rebuilt the company, and over the following two decades quietly turned it into the world’s most Bitcoin-focused public company. In August 2022, he transitioned from CEO to Executive Chairman, and in February 2025 the company rebranded as Strategy — a name that says everything about what the firm has become. As of March 2026, Strategy holds over 761,000 bitcoins, making it the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin in history, with a total acquisition cost of more than $33 billion. Saylor’s personal holdings include an additional 17,732 BTC. His net worth as tracked by Forbes stood at approximately $4.6 billion in early 2026.
Orange Pill Story
For years, Saylor was openly skeptical of Bitcoin. In 2013, he tweeted that “Bitcoin’s days are numbered” and that it would “go the way of online gambling” — a prediction he has since called the most costly tweet in history. His conversion came slowly, then all at once.
By the spring of 2020, Saylor found himself sitting on roughly $500 million in corporate cash. The Federal Reserve and global central banks were printing money at an unprecedented rate in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and Saylor grew alarmed watching his cash reserves lose purchasing power in real time. He read everything he could find: economics textbooks, monetary history, Saifedean Ammous’s The Bitcoin Standard. He spent hundreds of hours stress-testing the Bitcoin thesis from every angle — technical, legal, macroeconomic.
What convinced him was not speculation but thermodynamics. Saylor concluded that Bitcoin was the first engineered monetary asset with a mathematically guaranteed fixed supply — digital gold that could never be debased. On August 11, 2020, MicroStrategy announced it had purchased 21,454 bitcoins for $250 million, describing Bitcoin as “a dependable store of value and an attractive investment asset with more long-term appreciation potential than holding cash.” Within weeks he doubled down with another $175 million, then added $50 million more in December. The die was cast. There was no going back.
Bitcoin Philosophy & Quotes

Involvement with Bitcoin
Saylor’s Bitcoin involvement is without parallel in the corporate world. What began as a $250 million treasury allocation in August 2020 has grown into the most aggressive and sustained Bitcoin accumulation strategy in history. Through a relentless cycle of equity offerings, convertible debt issuances, and reinvested cash flows — a mechanism Saylor calls his “42/42 Capital Plan” — Strategy has purchased bitcoin in virtually every quarter since 2020. By March 2026, the company’s holdings stood at 761,068 BTC acquired at an average cost of approximately $66,384 per coin, representing a total investment of over $33 billion.
Saylor has also been a key architect of the corporate Bitcoin movement. He hosted MicroStrategy’s “Bitcoin for Corporations” conferences, which provided a roadmap for treasury managers and CFOs at other public companies considering similar strategies. Dozens of corporations have since followed Strategy’s lead, citing Saylor’s framework. He has personally lobbied U.S. lawmakers and Treasury officials for a national Bitcoin strategic reserve, testified before congressional committees, and met with White House officials to advocate for American Bitcoin leadership. He personally holds 17,732 BTC in addition to his equity stake in Strategy. Saylor’s long-term projection is that Bitcoin will grow into a $200 trillion asset class by 2045, with individual coins potentially reaching $13 million each.
